Is Inconel 625 the same as Nickel 625?

Is Inconel® 625 the same as Nickel 625?

In terms of chemical properties, mechanical properties, and applications, Inconel® 625 and Nickel 625 are similar, meeting the same quality standards. However, Inconel® is a trademark owned exclusively by Special Metals Corporation.

There remains some confusion among buyers, engineers, and processors regarding superalloys. Frequently, documents refer to Inconel® 600, while factory test reports may call it Nickel 600 or ATI® 600. Can one be substituted for the other?

The answer is a definite yes. ASTM and AMS specifications govern the manufacture of these high-performance alloys. Reputable manufacturers ensure that their materials comply with stringent guidelines. The crucial aspect of the name is not the prefix but the alloy number itself.

Why the Names?

Most high-temperature alloys were developed to meet the demands of aerospace engines, which required increased power, reliability, and durability. This need drove the development of machined metal parts that exceeded previous technological capabilities.

Nickel superalloys were created for applications involving high pressure, corrosive environments, and high kinetic energy. Mills that first produced these alloys trademarked their names when the patents were granted. Although those patents have now expired, the trademarked names are still widely used.

Summary

Most distributors opt for generic designations, such as “Nickel 400” instead of “Monel® 400,” or “Alloy C-276” instead of “Hastelloy® C-276.” This practice occurs because the patents for these high-quality nickel alloys have lapsed.

Ultimately, the important factor is that materials in the supply chain used for products impacting our lives are manufactured to high-quality standards and certified to meet internationally recognized specifications.

Nickel Vs Inconel

Nickel

Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 are commercially pure nickel alloys with a minimum nickel content of 99%. Alloy 200 is designated as UNS N and Werkstoff Number 2. It is utilized in manufacturing processing equipment and is ideal for maintaining product purity while handling foods, synthetic fibers, and alkalis. Nickel 200 is typically limited to applications below 600°F. At higher temperatures, it may experience graphitization, compromising its properties. Additionally, Alloy 200 can be easily welded via conventional processes, except for oxyacetylene methods.
