Regional Transit Service has christened the first two hydrogen fuel cell electric buses not only in its fleet but in New York State.

The hydrogen fuel cell buses are part of the RTS goal to operate a zero-emission fleet by , as required by an executive order signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul in .

The effort to become more environmentally friendly began in earnest for RTS in with the addition of five plug-in battery electric buses. Since then, the transit service has added 20 battery electric buses and now the two hydrogen fuel cell buses.

'Our mission at RTS is to provide safe, reliable, convenient and sustainable transportation, and our pivot to hydrogen fuel cell technology for our buses will help us carry out that mission,' CEO Miguel Velázquez said in a news release.

The hydrogen fuel cell buses are similar to diesel buses in terms of range and time to fuel, Velázquez said.

Over the past two years, RTS has received $35.1 million in hydrogen fuel cell-related grant funding for 12 40-foot buses, five Ford Transit vans, one portable hydrogen refueler and hydrogen-related facility upgrades.

'The future of public transportation has officially arrived,' said state Sen. Jeremy Cooney, chair of the Senate Transportation Committee. 'With the first hydrogen fuel cell electric buses in operation across the state, RTS is now a prime example of how public transportation and sustainability go hand in hand.'
