Why Edge Delete

Low-e coated glass is vital for energy savings and environmental sustainability in architectural and building industries. The low-e coating is a delicate thin film applied to the glass surface, which is typically insulated with another piece of glass. The low-e coating is placed on the inner side of double glazing, and the space between the glass is filled with either dry air or inert gas to protect the coating from corrosion.

Spacer bars, made of materials like aluminum, steel, stainless steel, reinforced plastic, or rubber, separate the two glass pieces. Butyl is used as the adhesive to seal the space between the spacer bar and glass because of its excellent moisture-proof properties. However, butyl does not adhere well to the low-e coating, necessitating the removal of the low-e coating around the glass edges—a process known as low-e edge deletion. By exposing the glass edges, butyl can adhere directly to the glass, ensuring optimal performance.
