Perfume caps – transparent, lacquered or metallized? - Politech

The wide array of standard perfume closures offers a tremendous opportunity for numerous cosmetic companies to set their products apart. With a multitude of designs, materials, decorations, and accessories available, choosing the right cap can be a challenging process. Moreover, the option to design custom packaging opens up endless possibilities. Historically, the style and function of perfume caps have evolved significantly over time. What do current offerings look like?

History of Perfume Closures

The history of perfume caps dates back to the early days of liquid fragrances. Proper closures have always been needed to keep the fragrance fresh and its aroma intact. Initially, cloths soaked at one end were used to seal perfume bottles, but this method allowed the scent to escape and diffuse.

Over the centuries, perfume caps have evolved from simple lids to cork stoppers similar to those used in old wineskins. Sometimes, these corked bottles were secured with ribbons or placed in special cases, but the most popular method involved sealing with wax. The cork and bottle neck were dipped in hot wax, effectively sealing any gaps and preserving the aroma. High-end brands even stamped their logos onto the wax seal.

Ancient Perfume Containers and Seals

This wax-sealing technique persisted despite the evolution of bottle closures. As wooden and leather stoppers gave way to glass, the practice of waxing the entire bottle continued for some time. Although metal caps made an appearance, glass remained the preferred material for decades. Glass had its drawbacks, though, as it was challenging to create a tight seal suitable for various storage positions. Even threading the glass for screw caps proved difficult.

Conical glass stoppers, now common in carafes, became a popular solution due to their tight fit. This method ensured a secure closure, often reinforced with a string tied between the stopper and bottle neck. Chanel No. 5 famously adopted this approach in 1921. Interestingly, this was several years after the world was introduced to Bakelite, the first widely-used plastic, which would eventually revolutionize the cosmetics and perfumery markets.

Modern Perfume Cap Materials

Today, most perfume caps are made from various types of plastics, dominating both mass-market and luxury segments. The differences lie in the material, color, decorations, and accessories used.

Coloured Perfume Caps

One popular method for distinguishing perfume caps is through mass dyeing. This involves adding dye to the base material, such as polypropylene, to produce colored caps. While this technique can eliminate transparency, it is an optional choice. Semi-transparent colors are also available, offering subtle tinting that maintains transparency. Colored PP caps are a mainstay in Politech’s product range.

Transparent Perfume Caps

Surlyn is a material that allows the creation of fully transparent caps, which can be dyed to achieve partial or full coloration while maintaining transparency. These tinted transparent caps are especially popular, often matched to the perfume’s liquid color. Surlyn’s high durability, crystal-like reflection, and consistency with glass bottles offer additional advantages. Unlike glass, Surlyn is warm to the touch and shatter-resistant.

Metallized Perfume Caps

Metallization at Politech involves applying a thin layer of aluminum to the cap. This process starts with a base coat of varnish, followed by a vacuum metallization process where a small aluminum wire is evaporated to coat the cap evenly. A final varnish layer enhances durability and appearance. Metallized caps, including perfume caps, are popular due to their durability and elegant metallic look.

Multi-component Sockets

Adding additional elements, such as weights inside the cap, is another way to enhance plastic packaging. This weight is concealed but noticeable when held, giving the product a more luxurious feel. Custom projects also incorporate elements like leather, ribbons, hot-stamped patterns, and brand logo tags. Politech meets clients' unique requirements to create perfectly tailored products.

"Tester no cap" - what does that mean?

asat00 said:

I heard somewhere that testers are actually BETTER than the regular stuff because they put more oils in the testers so that they last longer when applied to help sales. Anyone ever heard of this before? I'm not sure if it’s true but it sounds right to me.
Btw, I reached 100 posts which is small to some but a milestone for me.

Cheers

I've heard this theory, as well as the opposite—that testers are less concentrated. Some say sample vials are more concentrated, while others believe they are diluted. Even sales assistants offer contradictory information: a Guerlain rep said samples are more concentrated, while a By Kilian rep claimed their testers are diluted. It's possible that different testers have varying concentrations, but most appear to be the same as the standard bottles. In my experience, they all seem identical, except for Creed's Green Irish Tweed, which has noticeable variations.
