4ethanol - 4/29/ 10:39 Instead of the electric wire on the inside why don't you just make one of the barb wires hot? Seems like another fence you have to maintain IMO.

I would REALLY discourage you from making one of the barb wires hot.

If you are going to electrify one of the main fence wires make it SMOOTH 12 or 14 Gage wire on that one that will be hot.

Two reasons not to electrify a barb wire: #1 it is dangerous if an animal or person gets snagged by a barb and can't let loose from a very hot fence.  #2 the points on the barb wire concentrate the spark and always seem to be shorting out to something, especially in damp weather. BTDT.

I was looking at changing some pasture fence from a 4 wire to a 5 wire barbed wire fence. I have 2 questions. #1 Do I use a 2 point or 4 point barbed wire? Not a lot of difference in price. What would you recommend. #2 Fence is about the correct height - do I place the new wire on the top and move down the remaining wires or place it as the middle wire? Thank you for any suggestions! WY, OK

One of those things I just can't answer without seeing the old fence, as for the barbs I don't think it matters. If you are going to be holding younger calves up to yearlings you probably want the bottom 3 wires closer, if it is for cows or bulls I'd go evenly spaced to the top of the post. hltpfeeders

We use every other stand, but use 6 wires. Using 4 point all the way will be hard on cow. Using 2 point all the way the cows will still stick their heads through it. With everyother strand they wont mess with the fence too much. I think the way we do it there is less maintance on the fence since the cows are not always pushing on it. Just make sure your top wire is 2 point, for your pants sake. sc ks

I'll mention how Dad builds barb-wire fence. 5 wire or 6 wire, depends on IF cows with small baby calves, will be in that lot(="6 wire" for small, baby calves).

First, 8 foot post are pounded into the ground and 54" is left above ground. Next all barbed wire(just 2 prong) is 8" apart, starting roughly 2" below top of post. So, a "5 wire" fence has wires at 52",44",36",28",20". [This includes most all corn fields, too].
Now, you just need to drop down 8" more, for a "6 wire" fence, when/if needed.(at 12" from ground).

Neighbor hires professional fence builders and they, too, space wires at 8" apart.

This is in Iowa. We use a storyboard ( A 54" 2x4 with staples pounded already at 8"; at those heights), once posts are set, we mark post(every 8") with old, yellow crayon, that one uses to mark pigs/hogs. Next, we start pulling wire and staple them up.

My only suggestion is to get good high tensile wire , the cheap stuff is soft and won't hold a strech . t-boss

I use a similar "storyboard" though I didn't know that is what they're called. Mine has a notch cut with a chain saw about an inch deep at every place I want a wire. pharmer

North Central Missouri

I think the red brand is better wire and is worth the extra to me. Oklahoma isn't bad just not the best. I prefer the 2 point and 5 or 6 wires really the six.
